Omolaja Olaore, Fatal Okegbemi, and Rasaq Adeola, who allegedly stole five bags of sugar valued at N65,000 were on Thursday hauled up before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

The accused – Olaore, 41, a security guard, Okegbemi, 32, a factory worker; and Adeola, 46, a driver, are on the staff of OK Food Nigeria Ltd. They were arraigned before Magistrate A.O. Tanimola on charges of conspiracy and stealing.

The trio, who reside at Isolo, Surulere and Ilasa in Lagos State respectively, however, pleaded not guilty and were admitted to a bail of N50,000 each with one surety each in like sum. Tanimola said that the sureties must be gainfully employed and show evidence of two years’ tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

According to the prosecutor, Sgt.Aondohemba Koti, the accused committed the offences on March 7 at Toyota area of Mushin  in Lagos. He said that the accused conspired to steal five bags of sugar valued at N65,000; property of OK Food Nigeria Ltd.

He said, “The management of the company had  instructed the accused to load empty sacks into a truck.

“After loading, the management got a tip-off that the accused had loaded another item into the truck apart from the empty sacks.

“While the driver was about to drive the vehicle out of the company’s premises, the management stopped it and ordered the accused to off-load the empty sacks from the vehicle. Five bags of sugar were discovered among the empty sacks; the management had to invite the police who arrested the accused, ” the prosecutor said.

The prosecutor said that the offences contravened Sections 287 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised). The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 287 stipulates three years’ imprisonment for stealing. The case was adjourned until April 11 for mention.
