1. Maintain a Professional Attitude
Be Polite: Even though it is common for most people in our part of the world to have driver-turned-family relationships with their drivers, it is still important to engage in polite conversation. Your driver is there to attend to your needs, but that does not justify barking orders or speaking to them in a rude manner.
Make Expectations Known Early and Often: Emphasize honesty, always. Communicate your views about smoking barking orders and all other things you consider to be unethical.
2. Be Discreet
Share just enough information with your driver, especially as it directly relates to his job. Secure other information; a driver who overhears telephone conversations during which you mention millions of naira may be tempted to steal if the opportunity shows up. Read more about domestic staff and keeping your home safe and business secure.
Do not Compromise on Safety: Your driver’s main goal is to get you from one location to next safely. Idle chat may seem harmless, but it could be a dangerous distraction. Keep conversation to a minimum when:
• There’s a lot of traffic.
• The weather is bad.
• The driver is in unknown territory
Keep your drivers’ attention focused on what matters—driving: Do not put your driver in an uncomfortable situation, like dealing with chores that are irrelevant to his job. Sending him to get money on your behalf with your ATM card, with full access to view your account balance may encourage tendencies to steal.
3. Know Your Staff
Join the KYS (KnowYourStaff) community. This is a platform where employers in Nigeria can register their low cadre staff’s details for free. This information will be uploaded to a central database where prospective employers can find information about nannies, drivers, security guards, cleaners, shop assistants, etc. before hiring them. Here are list of services that can be booked conveniently on KYS.
Register your staff with their biometrics (finger print and image capture). KYS (KnowYourStaff) offers biometrics capture services for employers to register their low cadre staff’s identity on a central database.
Conduct a proper background check to verify your driver’s past job records and authenticate that guarantors, their addresses and every means of identification they provide is real. Click here to learn more about how to verify important information about current and new low cadre staff.
