Two cooks who from Benin Republic, Victor Hounkpe and David Amusu conspired to poison their employers’ meals with a sleep-inducing substance with the intention of gaining free access into their inner rooms to steal jewelry and cash from the Lekki residence when everyone fell asleep.

Trouble started for the family after Hounkpe, just few weeks into being employed there prepared a pot of vegetable soup for the family. Everyone was served the food for dinner but minutes after, the head of the household, Chinaka Nwogu, complained of stomach upset and was rushed to the hospital by his wife, who also began to complain of severe stomach ache and eventually collapsed at the hospital gate.

While doctors were battling to save the lives of the victims, efforts to arrest Hounkpe proved abortive initially. They were later apprehended by operatives of the Department of Criminal Investigation (DCI), Panti, Yaba. During interrogation, he confessed to have put some substances in the food served and further confessed that David Amusu, the former cook, who recommended him to his employers, gave him the substance and directed him on how to administer it.

He admitted that their intention was to gain unfettered access into the inner rooms to rob the couple after they must have passed out. Hounkpe said he was promised a part of the loot that would have been gotten from the robbery, as his role was to administer the substance to their food and open the door for David Amusu and other members of the robbery gang that fateful day. According to him, “I put the substance into their food. It was given to me by David. He told me the drug was a sleeping tablet and that it would put them all to sleep so that they would gain easy access into the house. I took to my heels when the gate man told me that the doctors said they were suffering from food poisoning.”

David Amusu on his part claimed the idea was sold to him by Victor Hounkpe. His words: “I left my former boss because I was not feeling well, so I recommended Hounkpe to her. But when he got the job, he called me to say we should rob the family. He asked if I had any sleeping tablet that would put them to sleep. So I ground 10 tablets of Super Appetite and gave it to him’’.

The victims, Chinaka Nwogu and his wife, Omowunmi, had to be transferred to a hospital outside the country for emergency treatment. Apart from the couple, two domestic staff who also ate from the vegetable soup became unconscious and were hospitalized.
