Anna Payaro, a house help, has been sentenced to a total of 13 years imprisonment with hard labour after an Igbosere Chief Magistrate’s Court in Lagos found her guilty of conspiracy, burglary, breaking, entering, and theft of her employer’s jewellery and cash.

Anna Payaro and her accomplices conspired to commit the offences on May 27, 2016, at Goshen Estate, Lekki Lagos. She broke into the premises of her employer, Mr. Olatunde Adepoju, while he was abroad with the rest of his family, and stole jewellery valued at N1.2 million, and cash of N300,000 and $5,000.

Anna Payaro, 28, was arraigned by the police on June 6, 2016, and re-arraigned on a substituted charge on November 22, 2016. The trial lasted 10-months, during which one of the estate executives, Mrs. Teniola Jaiyeola testified to overhearing the convict communicating with her accomplices over the phone.

At the end of the trial, the court sentenced Anna Payaro to two years imprisonment each on the counts of conspiracy, burglary, breaking and entering, and five years with hard labour on the count of stealing.

However, Anna Payaro will spend only five years in jail as the sentences will run concurrently.
